Juho Wilskman, PhD, specializes in medieval military history and the Byzantine Empire. He is currently the chairman of the Society for Byzantine Studies in Finland.

Wilskman graduated from the University of Helsinki with a master’s degree in history in October 2007 and earned his doctorate in December 2021. His dissertation, “Comparing Military Cultures: Warfare in the Aegean Region from the Fourth Crusade to the Early Fifteenth Century” Wilskman compared the warfare and military institutions of the Byzantines, Western Europeans, and Turks in the Aegean region, which was formerly part of the Byzantine Empire. Wilskman drew on sources and research in ten different languages, and the thesis received the highest possible grade.

In the fall of 2023, Juho Wilskman published a book for a wider audience in Finnish, War in the Middle Ages. The book provides an extensive overview of warfare and military institutions in Europe, Asia, and North Africa from the 4th century to the early 16th century. In addition, he has written numerous scholarly and popular articles, presented his research at international conferences, and also gives public lectures on these topics upon request.

Currently, Wilskman is contributing to a book series on Byzantine military history. The volumes he is writing are scheduled as follows: Military History of Byzantine Rome 1204–1261 (2025); Military History of Byzantine Rome 1261–1328 (2026); Military History of Byzantine Rome 1328–1461 (2027).
